I’m currently subscribed to 541 feeds, about 90% of which are tech, media, or communications related. Below I’ve listed some of my favorite reads, either because these sites are written especially usefully, by people I know, or simply with a great style. I change this list from time to time, and change the four in my sidebar much more often, so if you notice you’ve been moved or removed, please take no offense, I’m simply switching things around for a while.
Adam Ostrow – Adam is a co-founder of MindSay, the first blogging service I ever used. He was innovating then, and he hasn’t stopped since. His blog is about tech, blogging, and investment. He’s not afraid to take provocative stances when he writes, and he’s also a valuable addition to Mashable.
Andrew Rollins – Andrew is a brilliant startup founder working on a much-needed mobile app service. Since meeting him at BarCampBoston, I’ve enjoyed seeing the insight his writing consistently displays.
Brian Balfour – Brian’s a web entrepreneur I met after moving to Boston. He writes about online social networks, and he’s provided several insights I’ve found very valuable.
Inside Facebook – First started by Justin Smith, I love Inside Facebook for providing people with information about such a popular topic, so I don’t have to. With the help of two other contributing authors, Inside Facebook covers every Facebook-related news item of note, and adds a healthy does of speculation and insight to boot.
James Hall – I met James while he was visiting Boston, where he’ll hopefully come and join us permanently soon. His blog is full of great ideas, some of which we’ve collaborated on.
Jason Kottke – One of the most well-known “A-listers”, Jason is a genuinely interesting guy. His blog posts some of the real gems of the web, and not just gems from the topics you think you’re interested in, but some that will broaden your horizons as well. He also designed the Silkscreen font, which is the best font for tiny text, period.
Jeremiah Owyang – Jeremiah is a “Web Strategist”, a title that somewhat overlaps with my own. He’s a smart guy, recently hired by Forrester Research, and his blog offers useful information for other web strategists.
Joshua Porter – Josh was another inspiration of mine, due to his excellent illustrations of web concepts. His blog, Bokardo, is about “social design”; it’s a must-read for anyone building a social web application.
Melissa Sconyers – Melissa is a tech geek revolutionizing the marketing world. She’s one of the most motivated & intelligent people I know, and her blog escalates us with her as she blazes forward.
Read/Write Web – This site was one of my inspirations when conceptualizing Social Strategist. Original content, context where needed, and great commentary. Founded by Richard MacManus, several authors contribute regularly. This site usually gets priority in my feed reading.
Robert Scoble – Also an A-lister, Robert has given me feed-subscription goals for how dedicated I need to be to get the most unique information out of the web. He co-authored Naked Conversations, the book about business blogging. He’s also a nice guy who didn’t say “Why the **** are you bothering me!?” when I called him, and that alone earns him a place on this list.
Shimon Rura – Shimon is an amazing hacker. Subscribing to his feed gets you a big dose of wow about twice a month.
